What happens
Jack Benny asks his cast to call him John, believing the name sounds more dignified for a dramatic actor, and his friends react with teasing and their own name-change ideas. Dennis Day and Phil Harris join the banter as Benny plans a dramatic offering based on the film Margie. Benny takes the role of Margie's schoolteacher, and Mary Livingstone plays Margie. The sketch opens with Margie and her husband looking over old photographs and recalling their high school days together, as she reminisces about the teacher who won her heart. Rochester also appears, trying to sell Benny's old car.
A radio studio during a comedy broadcast, followed by a dramatized sketch set in a family home and a high school classroom.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Rochester, Don
Listen for: Benny insisting on being called John, and the classroom sketch where Dennis Day's answers and the roll call provoke comic confusion.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
