What happens
Jack Benny is absent from this Jell-O program, and Don Wilson hosts a variety hour in his place. Music, singing and commercials fill the broadcast. The transcript shows a comic folk-style song about a broke man and his neighbors who gather to dance on his porch, with a fiddle and flute, and a hat is passed round for the piper. Dennis Day sings a shepherd's melody, and a mixed chorus performs America the Beautiful. The series is Jack Benny, first aired on January 18, 1942, on NBC and CBS Radio, with Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris among the lead actors.
A radio variety program broadcast on NBC and CBS Radio, hosted by Don Wilson in place of Jack Benny.
Characters: Don Wilson, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Mary Livingstone, Mickey Mulligan, Mrs. Cafferty
Listen for: Dennis Day singing the shepherd's melody, and the folk song about dancing on the porch with the piper and the hat being passed.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
