What happens

Jack Benny opens his new Jell-O program with a parody of his own nervousness, trading jokes with Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris and Eddie Anderson about the reviews of his first broadcast. The comedy then turns to a condensed dramatization of Anthony Adverse. A boy named Anthony is hired by merchant John Bonnyfeather, falls in love with Angela, and is sent to Cuba to collect a debt. There he is given a rubber plantation in Africa, where he becomes a harsh and greedy owner. Benny plays the lead, with Mary Livingstone as Angela and Kenny Baker as a servant. The program aired on October 11, 1936, on NBC and CBS Radio.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
