What happens

Paladin agrees to impersonate Jim Griffin, a discharged soldier who was part of a trio that stole $80,000 in army payroll three years ago. The money was buried and divided into three map pieces among the conspirators. Paladin must convince Griffin's girlfriend Anna that he is really Griffin, obtain his map fragment, and meet the other thieves to locate the hidden payroll.

San Francisco and surrounding towns, 1875. The Carlton Hotel, the Presidio, a farmhouse 15 miles from San Francisco, and the Blue Nose Saloon in Johnson City.
