Radio's private eyes ran from the 1940s to the very end of network drama. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, "the man with the action-packed expense account," aired on CBS from 1949 to 1962, and its last broadcast, on September 30, 1962, is often cited as the end of radio's golden age. Along the way came Jack Webb's waterfront drifter Pat Novak, Dick Powell's wisecracking Richard Diamond, created by future Pink Panther director Blake Edwards, Alan Ladd in Box 13, and Candy Matson, a San Francisco private eye played by Natalie Masters in a genre that otherwise belonged to men.
The night desk belongs to Sal Vitale, a sergeant at the 9th Precinct who has heard every story twice and believes maybe half of them: gravelly, deadpan, fond of a good alibi and a bad cup of coffee. Gumshoe is for film noir fans, mystery readers, true-crime podcast listeners curious about where the form began, and anyone who wants a whole case on a long drive. Johnny Dollar, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and the other headline detectives also have channels of their own here.
