What happens

Great Gildersleeve, the pompous small-town head of his household, grows increasingly troubled as gossip spreads that he is courting Miss Piper, the young piano teacher who gives his nephew Leroy lessons. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running radio comedy, and this 1947 episode aired on NBC on April 16 with Harold Peary in the title role, alongside Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle. Gildersleeve's niece Marjorie is blunt about how the town talks, and his friend Judge Hooker warns him to stop embarrassing himself. Gildersleeve sets out to face his feelings, and his thoughts turn to the town's other gossip, while Leila Ransom, a widow of his acquaintance, also takes an interest in him.

A small town, at the Gildersleeve house and around town on a Saturday.

Characters: Great Gildersleeve, Leroy, Marjorie, Ben, Judge Hooker, Miss Piper, Leila Ransom, Dr. Needham

Listen for: Gildersleeve's pompous pronouncements and his increasingly awkward attempts to deny his feelings for Miss Piper.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
