What happens
Water commissioner Gildersleeve returns from vacation to find the local newspaper, edited by Frank Powers, criticising the taste of the town's water supply. He is summoned to the mayor's office, where the town's war bond drive is failing, and Powers is put in charge of it, which Gildersleeve refuses to accept. Gildersleeve then goes door to door selling bonds, while his nephew Leroy keeps turning up in unexpected places. The Great Gildersleeve is a radio comedy from 1943, first broadcast on NBC on September 12, 1943, and starring Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.
Summerfield, a small town, during the Second World War
Characters: Gildersleeve, Leroy, Marjorie, Bertie, Frank Powers, Mayor, Judge Hooker, Miss Goodwin
Listen for: Gildersleeve's argument with Powers over the water and the war bond drive, and his visit to the principal's office.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
