What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a pompous small-town man, has been nursing a toothache and avoiding the dentist. His niece Marjorie and his ward Leroy press him to make an appointment, and Leroy, who is eager to leave, offers his own dental slot to Gildersleeve. Meanwhile Gildersleeve gets a ride with Judge Hooker, who suggests a tooth extraction, then argues about gas rationing with Floyd the barber. At the water department, Miss Fitch keeps the office running. Gildersleeve tries a toothache remedy from the druggist Mr. Peavey, and the episode ends with him nervously waiting at the dentist's office, where Dr. Shanks is about to treat him. The Great Gildersleeve is an NBC radio comedy, first broadcast on December 6, 1942, starring Harold Peary.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
