What happens

Gildersleeve spends a half-day holiday at home on Thanksgiving and finds his nephew Leroy and young Craig Bullard trying to set off homemade rockets. He lectures them and recommends the Mark Twain story of Tom Sawyer, then buys Leroy a copy. Inspired by the book, the boys vanish, leaving a bloodstained note for Aunt Polly, and Gildersleeve's household and friends begin a search along the creek. The Great Gildersleeve, starring Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle, aired on NBC on November 26, 1947.

Listen for: Gildersleeve's attempts to persuade the boys to play safely, and the search by the adults for the missing boys

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
