What happens
Gildersleeve, the water commissioner, is under pressure from Mayor Twilliger to finish his overdue fiscal report, and his second cousin Robbins is said to be eyeing his job. Meanwhile his housekeeper Birdie, his nephew Leroy and his friend Peavey all pull at his evening, and his romantic plans with Doris Dorymple are repeatedly interrupted. Gildersleeve struggles to keep his promises to his staff and to the mayor as the night wears on. The Great Gildersleeve, a radio comedy, is heard in this episode first broadcast on NBC on December 3, 1947, with Harold Peary in the title role.
A town's water department office and the Gildersleeve household, late on a weekday.
Characters: Gildersleeve, Bessie, Doris Dorymple, Horace, Peavey, Birdie, Leroy, Robbins
Listen for: Gildersleeve's increasingly absurd attempts to juggle the fiscal report, Leroy's geography homework and his romantic evening with Doris.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
