What happens
Summerfield is getting television, and Gildersleeve's neighbors and town officials are excited about it. Peavey, the druggist, puts a set in his shop, where customers crowd around to watch. Gildersleeve, however, insists his own household will have no television. His nephew Leroy tries to talk him into buying one, first by a trip to the appliance store, then by staging a sort of stunt to worry him. Original air date March 26, 1952, on NBC, in The Great Gildersleeve, starring Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.
Summerfield, a small American town, during the arrival of television
Characters: Gildersleeve, Peavey, Judge Hooker, Leroy, Marjorie, Bertie, Birdie, Mrs. Peavey
Listen for: Peavey's drugstore, where the wrestling and English movie are shown on the set, and Leroy's efforts to talk his uncle into buying one
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
