What happens
Gildersleeve, a small-town man, is inspired by his neighbor Rumsen Bullard's flower beds and decides to take up gardening himself. Eager to match Bullard, he rushes to the nursery and buys far more plants than he needs, then has Leroy help him dig and plant. Their efforts bring a string of mishaps, including the wrong plants for the sunny spot, a costly plow, and sore backs. This episode of The Great Gildersleeve aired on NBC on March 19, 1952, with Harold Peary in the title role, alongside Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.
Summerfield, spring, the Gildersleeve house and yard and the neighboring Bullard property, with a nearby nursery.
Characters: Gildersleeve, Leroy, Rumsen Bullard, Judge Hooker, Nick, Bertie, Marjorie, Birdie
Listen for: Gildersleeve's grand plans for his garden and the nursery salesman Nick's advice on what to buy.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
