What happens
Gildersleeve is worried that his nephew Leroy is learning nothing at school, and he tries to help him study at home while Leroy's sister Leola sits nearby. Gildersleeve quizzes Leroy on history and spelling, finds gaps in what he knows, and decides to go to the school to speak with Leroy's teacher, Miss Wiley. At the school he finds overcrowded classrooms, a shortage of seats and materials, and a teacher close to her limit. Gildersleeve then presses the school board, and the story turns to the wider strain on teachers and schools. This is The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on May 21, 1947, with Harold Peary in the title role.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
