What happens

Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, is badgered by insurance man Purvis into a free checkup. The doctor finds his heart sound but advises him to cut back on his cigars, and Gildy resolves to quit smoking. Trying to kick the habit, he hunts for something to chew at the drugstore, where the clerk offers him a range of gums. Meanwhile Gildy's friend Peavey has returned to town after an unexplained absence, and Leila Ransom tries to pry the story out of him. The episode is recorded in the 1947 NBC series The Great Gildersleeve, first aired May 28, 1947, and stars Harold Peary.

Summerfield, a small town; Gildersleeve's office, the doctor's office, his house and the drugstore, on a Saturday afternoon in May.

Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Purvis, Doc Sample, Bertie, Judge Hooker, Leila Ransom, Peavey, Beckman

Listen for: Purvis's pushy insurance pitch and Gildy's suspicious reaction to the free checkup.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
