What happens

Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve hires Leila Ransom as his new secretary at the Summerfield Water Department after a want-ad search. Leila is charming but flustered in the office, and Gildersleeve, eager to appear businesslike, tries to keep their relationship strictly professional. His nephew Leroy and niece Marjorie tangle with neighborhood friends at dinner, and the household routine is disrupted. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running NBC comedy of the 1940s, first aired in 1945, starring Harold Peary. Interruptions and misunderstandings build as Gildersleeve struggles to keep control of his office and his temper.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
