What happens
Leila's cousin Adeline Fairchild arrives in Summerfield, and the townspeople gossip about her. Gildersleeve, who has sworn off women, becomes interested in his new neighbor and is soon drawn into her company. Adeline tells him about her unhappy romance with a man named Cecil, and Gildersleeve, eager to be the protector she needs, responds warmly. Their evening together leaves him enchanted. The Great Gildersleeve is a radio comedy from NBC, first broadcast on February 18, 1948, and starring Harold Peary.
Summerfield, a small town, on a Saturday in the late 1940s, centred on Gildersleeve's neighbourhood and the barbershop.
Characters: Great Gildersleeve, Adeline Fairchild, Leila, Birdie, Judge Hooker, Floyd, Peavey, Jane
Listen for: Gildersleeve's shifting attitude toward Adeline as he goes from declaring he is uninterested to being charmed by her.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
