What happens
Water Commissioner Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve discovers that errors in his department reports may be due to his own failing eyesight. He visits Doc Elmquist for an eye examination and reluctantly accepts glasses, though he insists he does not really need them. At home his niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy notice the change, and his friends and secretary Bessie react with teasing and sympathy. The story follows his self-consciousness about wearing glasses while he attends to the new eighth-grade teacher, Miss Gray, and a school board meeting. The Great Gildersleeve is a radio comedy series; this episode aired on NBC on February 11, 1948, with Harold Peary in the title role.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
