What happens
Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, is named acting mayor while Mayor Tewilliger is away on business. Gildersleeve is given the job after the mayor leaves town, and he treats the post as a chance to dress up and take it easy. Bessie, his secretary, Miss Harper, and his friend Judge Hooker all become involved as the day's plans grow complicated. The Great Gildersleeve, the NBC radio comedy series, was first broadcast on February 4, 1948, with Harold Peary in the title role, alongside Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
