What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, spends a frustrating day trying to get his 1948 automobile license plates before the deadline. He waits in long lines, boards the wrong bus, and runs into friends and colleagues along the way. Meanwhile, he is also hoping to be chosen to sing lead for the Jolly Boys barbershop quartet, a choice that depends on Chief Gates. The Great Gildersleeve is an NBC radio comedy series, and this episode aired on January 28, 1948. Harold Peary plays the title role, with Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle also in the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
