What happens

Gildersleeve, Summerfield's water commissioner, is behind on his office work, and his nephew Leroy is struggling at school. Gildersleeve promises to help Leroy with his homework, but keeps putting it off, and Leroy is still stuck on a history composition about the Missouri Compromise. When friends visit and Gildersleeve's old friend Horace Hooker questions his ambitions and his preparation for the future, Gildersleeve begins to reconsider his habits. Leela asks him out to the movies, and Gildersleeve has to weigh her invitation against the promises he has made to himself and to Leroy. The episode is from The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on November 4, 1945, starring Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
