What happens
Gildersleeve rides the bus home after a tiring day and complains with neighbor Mr. Bullard that modern schools teach too little. At home, he finds his nephew Leroy and niece Marjorie playing cards and make-believe amid the mess, and he resolves to check on Leroy's schooling. He visits Eve Goodwin, the school principal, expecting to scold her about the teaching. Instead she challenges him to read Plato's Republic and the great books. The Great Gildersleeve starred Harold Peary, and this episode first aired on NBC on November 20, 1946.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
