What happens

Brock Morton P. Gildersleeve, the local water commissioner of Summerfield, is late again for his date with Leroy's school principal Irene Henshaw, and she is fed up with him. Meanwhile, his housekeeper Birdie and his friend Mr. Peavey are at odds over Mrs. Peavey's plan to name a new parrot after a relative. Gildersleeve tries to patch up the quarrel between the Peaveys and is shut in a basement. The Great Gildersleeve aired on NBC on January 13, 1954, starring Harold Peary, with Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle also in the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
