What happens

Gildersleeve, the bachelor water commissioner of Summerfield, meets Irene Henshaw's father, who has arrived in town and seems eager to see his daughter married. Irene has been keeping company with Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve's rival, Dr. Brock Throckmorton, and her father takes a liking to the Doctor and mistakes Gildersleeve for the suitor. Gildersleeve tries to bring Mr. Henshaw to understand that his friendship with Irene is purely platonic, but the older man keeps assuming otherwise. The episode is part of the long-running NBC radio series The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on January 6, 1954, with Harold Peary and Willard Waterman in the lead roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
