What happens

Gildersleeve, a pompous small-town man, is advised by his friend Judge Hooker to rest after a doctor warns that his blood pressure is dangerously high. The judge suggests a fishing trip to Lake Hackmatack, and Gildersleeve agrees, taking his niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy along. Before they leave, Leroy's homemade root beer is discovered in the kitchen, and a flat tire delays the family's departure. At the lake, Gildersleeve fishes with great ceremony but catches nothing, while the children and their uncle clash over the fish and the trip. The series is a radio comedy from The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on August 30, 1942, starring Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
