What happens

Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, has become unusually restless and cheerful, and he spends an afternoon in his office playing games with his secretary Bessie instead of working. He later goes out for a night on the town with his niece Marjorie. Soon he is drawn into a dispute between Eve Goodwin and Lila Ransom over the local Red Cross drive, which Judge Hooker has left in Gildersleeve's hands while he is away. The conflict centers on Mrs. Pettibone, who has taken the window display Lila was promised. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running radio comedy, and this episode aired on NBC on March 11, 1945, with Harold Peary in the title role.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
