What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a Summerfield man who has been feuding with the water department over poor pressure, learns that Commissioner Clannahan has resigned and that the town council may appoint him to the post. Believing the appointment is nearly certain, he begins to prepare for the role, buying a new suit, posing for a photograph and drafting a statement for the newspaper. His niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy get caught up in the excitement as the council prepares to meet. This is the Great Gildersleeve, the radio comedy written by John Whedon, broadcast by NBC on October 18, 1942, with Harold Peary in the title role.
Summerfield, a small town with a barbershop, a drugstore, a newspaper office and a town hall
Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Floyd, Judge Hooker, Peavey, Marjorie, Leroy, Bertie, Mrs. Ransom
Listen for: Gildersleeve's growing certainty that he will be appointed water commissioner, and the moment when a joke reaches the newspaper
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
