What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve is due at Judge Hooker's annual dinner, a long-standing custom between the two old friends, but he has double-booked the evening with a social engagement with Eve Goodwin. Unable to reply to her invitation in time, he sits through the judge's formal meal and the yearly ceremony of measuring the children against the wall, while his nephew Leroy and niece Marjorie look on. Gildersleeve then asks a friend to telephone him at the judge's house, hoping the call will give him an excuse to leave early. This episode of The Great Gildersleeve, broadcast by NBC on April 7, 1946, stars Harold Peary.
Gildersleeve's home in Summerfield, and then Judge Hooker's house for an annual dinner
Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Judge Hooker, Leroy, Marjorie, Birdie, Eve Goodwin, Peavey, Mrs. Fogel
Listen for: Gildersleeve's attempt to get out of the judge's dinner by arranging a fake phone call, and the judge's annual measuring of the children
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
