What happens

Gildersleeve comes home from the office worn out by the grim newspaper headlines about international tensions and atomic war. Declaring that he wants one last fling before the world ends, he decides to take his family on a picnic in the country, despite rain forecasts and a cold day. Leroy, Marjorie, Birdie and Leila Ransom all have their doubts as the outing gets underway. Gildersleeve's friend Peavey is skeptical about the plan. The episode follows the family's picnic preparations and their first hours in the woods, where Gildersleeve starts to enjoy the day and rethink his gloomy outlook.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
