Fifteen minutes of latchkey-kid 80s nostalgia, a new episode every day. A Stupid Potato show.

About Gen X Mix

Gen X Mix is a free daily Generation X nostalgia podcast and 24/7 stream from Stupid Potato: fifteen minutes a day of 80s TV commercials, Saturday morning cartoon and TV theme songs, retro jingles, toy and cereal ads and MTV-era promos from 1975 to 1992. Your host is Roxy Vance, a wry former college radio DJ. It is made for the latchkey kids who grew up on MTV, Atari, mall arcades and after-school specials, and for anyone who wants to hear what the 80s sounded like between the shows.

Generation X grew up as cable arrived and the commercial break got louder. MTV signed on in 1981, the Atari 2600 turned living rooms into arcades, and cereal and toy makers chased kids with jingles that still stick. Gen X Mix plays those ads alongside the theme songs: Knight Rider, The A-Team, Cheers, He-Man, The Transformers, The Smurfs and Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme," the 1985 number-one hit that also plays Roxy out at the end of each episode.

Roxy is an original character: a 54-year-old former video store clerk from the Sacramento suburbs who hosts from a basement full of VHS tapes and mixtapes. She is dry, deadpan and skeptical of every 80s ad claim ("it's not just for breakfast anymore"), jokes about her knees and her reading glasses, and treats each listener like a friend from the back of the school bus. Each week follows a theme that steers the lineup, so no two episodes sound alike.
