What happens
Correspondent J.B. Kendall arrives in Fort Benton, Montana to write about the gold fields for the London Times. A newspaper editor directs him to Shorthorn Tom, a grizzled old prospector, who claims to have discovered a lost mine rich with gold nuggets in a cave in the Highwoods mountains years ago. After losing the location in a blizzard that killed his partner, Tom has searched unsuccessfully for eight years to relocate it.
Fort Benton, Montana Territory, primarily in a ramshackle prospector's shack and newspaper office
Characters: J.B. Kendall, John Warren, Shorthorn Tom
Listen for: Kendall's British perspective on frontier life, the prospector's colorful dialect, and the debate over whether Tom's lost mine is real or merely a tall tale.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
