What happens
Fred Allen hosts a comedy episode of his radio show, which airs on CBS and NBC, with Portland Hoffa, Kenny Delmar and Minerva Pious. Fred joins the program in a playful exchange about National Baby Week. Later, the cast visits Allen's Alley, where postal workers' pay and the mail are discussed with a number of colourful residents. Bert Lahr, a guest, is then introduced and the pair plan a trip to the racetrack, but a racing form and a sudden police arrest lead to a mock courtroom sequence. The segment ends with Allen charged for reading a racing form in New York, with the courtroom scene taking its absurd course.
A New York radio studio and the comic Allen's Alley, followed by a mock courtroom in New York City.
Characters: Fred Allen, Portland Hoffa, Kenny Delmar, Minerva Pious, Bert Lahr, Senator Claghorn, Titus Moody, Mrs. Nussbaum
Listen for: The courtroom sequence, in which Allen is put on trial for reading a racing form, and the exchanges between Allen and Bert Lahr.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
