What happens
Archie the manager at Duffy's Tavern hosts Deems Taylor, a well-known music critic, at the bar. Archie has written an opera for television and recruits Taylor to sing it. Taylor is reluctant, and Finnegan and Miss Duffy are pulled into the rehearsal alongside him. The series Duffy's Tavern is broadcast on CBS, NBC Blue and NBC, with Ed Gardner in the lead, and this episode first aired on November 16, 1951. Clashing tastes, a sensitive subject about Taylor's hair, and Archie's ambitious opera fill the evening at the tavern.
Duffy's Tavern, a Manhattan bar
Characters: Archie, Deems Taylor, Finnegan, Miss Duffy, Fats
Listen for: Archie's opera rehearsal and Deems Taylor's reactions to it
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
