What happens
Archie, the proprietor of Duffy's Tavern, plans to take actress Linda Darnell to the policeman's ball as his queen, and the regulars at the bar cannot resist commenting on it. Finnegan and Eddie the waiter tease him about his cologne and his confidence, while Officer Clancy grows eager to meet the star. Archie has bragged that she will attend, and when word gets around that he needs her there, the tavern's crowd and Clancy begin to make the night more complicated. The episode is a comedy of errors built on a rumoured guest and a series of mistaken identities. This is the Duffy's Tavern series, from its original broadcast of January 19, 1945, starring Ed Gardner, Shirley Booth, Charlie Cantor and Florence Halop.
Duffy's Tavern, a bar in New York City, on the evening before a policeman's ball
Characters: Archie, Finnegan, Eddie, Miss Duffy, Officer Clancy, Linda Darnell, Bob Graham, Jack Bailey
Listen for: Archie's boast about taking Linda Darnell to the policeman's ball, and the mix-up when Eddie is asked to impersonate singer Bob Graham
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
