About Coming Attractions

Coming Attractions is a free daily vintage movie trailer podcast and 24/7 stream from Stupid Potato: fifteen minutes a day of classic theatrical trailers, TV spots and radio spots for the movies of 1950 to 1989. Creature features and flying saucers, westerns and disaster epics, drive-in B-movies, cult classics and the blockbusters that changed Hollywood, introduced by Ray Starling, a retired drive-in movie projectionist. It is made for movie lovers, horror and science fiction fans, and anyone who misses the previews as much as the picture.

Trailers got their name because in the early days of the movies they ran after the feature, trailing it, until theaters learned that audiences walked out and moved them to the front. By the 1950s the coming attractions were a show of their own: breathless narrators, giant title cards, "See! Hear! Thrill!" and casts of thousands. Coming Attractions plays the previews for pictures like The Thing from Another World, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, Plan 9 from Outer Space, Psycho, Viva Las Vegas, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Young Frankenstein, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Star Wars, Halloween, Alien and Return of the Jedi, along with lobby spots and radio ads from the drive-in era.

Ray Starling is an original character: a 71-year-old projectionist who ran the booth at the Starlite Drive-In outside Amarillo, Texas, for thirty-one years, after starting there as a teenage popcorn boy. He hosts from the old projection booth, tells booth stories he admits get bigger every year, ribs the hokey narrators and the rubber monsters, and never spoils an ending. Each week has a theme, from atomic monsters and Martians to westerns, the blaxploitation era, Vincent Price and Roger Corman, Elvis at the movies and Christmas at the drive-in, so no two episodes sound alike.
