What happens
Gracie Allen tries to persuade her husband George Burns to replace Clark Gable in a film adaptation of The Hucksters, arguing that a radio glamour boy suits the role. George resists, and Gracie reveals she has also been talking up Jack Carson, a guest star she has invited to the show. Carson arrives expecting the part and performs imitations to win Gracie over. Gracie and George set up an acting contest to settle who should play the lead, and the two men are soon sparring for the role.
The Burns home and a cigar store, in a 1946 episode of the radio comedy series Burns and Allen.
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jack Carson, Bill Goodwin, Meredith Willson, Stanley
Listen for: Gracie's mistaken flattery of George, and the sparring between George and Jack Carson over who is the better actor.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
