What happens
George Burns is working late in his office when Fred Astaire, who has rented the room above, begins rehearsing loudly and disturbs him. George is annoyed and sends word upstairs, and Gracie Allen intervenes, drawn into the building's tangle of tenants and rent. Meanwhile Tootsie Saggwell, a neighbour, announces she intends to pursue a career instead of marriage, and Gracie arranges for her to audition as Astaire's new dancing partner. Gracie's mix-ups over who is where, what is being said, and what can be heard drive much of the comedy. The episode is from the Burns and Allen series, broadcast on February 15, 1944, with Gracie Allen, Bea Benaderet, Meredith Willson and Mel Blanc among the cast.
The Burns house and the office building where George works, with Stanley's cigar store nearby.
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Fred Astaire, Tootsie Saggwell, Bill Goodwin, Stanley
Listen for: Gracie's confused attempts to help George with the dancing upstairs, and the arrangement to introduce Tootsie to Fred Astaire.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
