What happens

Dan Holiday, a mystery writer, arrives in a city where betting agents are losing thousands weekly to a mysterious winning syndicate. The culprits consistently pick long shots that no one should be able to predict in advance, and none of them ever visit the track. Holiday investigates the most consistent winners and arranges to meet Terri Vaughn, a singer who has won twenty thousand dollars today alone with seemingly impossible bets.
