What happens

Dan Holiday receives a mysterious note asking him to meet a woman at the Mercantile building. The woman, who calls herself Mary Jones, asks him to pose for photographs with her, then disappears. The next morning, Dan discovers a newspaper announcement of his engagement to Marcia Jameson, a prominent heiress, featuring their photograph together. Marcia later asks Dan to pretend to be her fiancé until the 16th of the month, though she won't explain why.
