What happens

Dan Holiday receives a mysterious summons to meet with Abner Blake, the chief investigator for Northern Insurance. Blake believes that Dr. Max Alexander, who disappeared seven years ago after a failed brain surgery, is actually alive and faking his death to allow his widow to collect on his large insurance policy. Blake hires Holiday to find the missing doctor before the seven-year limit expires and the insurance company must pay out.
