What happens

Dan Holiday receives a mysterious invitation to a charity bazaar where he wins an ugly lamp as a prize for guessing the number of beans in a jar. When his apartment is ransacked and he's beaten by thugs demanding the lamp, he discovers that a valuable diamond—the Mannering Blue—has gone missing from a nearby estate, and the lamp may hold the key to the theft.
