The Leumas Matter

Jonathan Doe, the man who never really existed. That's right. That was a pretty rough one, Les. Well, which is it? So what happened? I mean, what have you got to go on? Leads, clues, whatever you want to call them.

Call that funny. So maybe you're right. Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Once again, submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. In the worldwide mutual insurance company, Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut.

Following his and account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Loomis Matter, spelled L-E-U-M-A-S. It's an all-huh. Well, at least it gives me a clean, unplotted start. So, expense account item one, $1.10 for a taxi to the Office of World Wide Mutual and the Spirling Building down on the square.

Yeah, eh. Hey, I suppose I could have saved time by telling you over the phone just to pack your bags and head on down to Viman, but sit down. Ah, thanks. On a New Jersey?

That's right. About halfway between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Yeah, less. I know the place. I handle a couple of... Wait a minute. You said Loomis. That's right. El Maloomis, the man who disappeared. Isn't there a Loomis glass company in Vineland?

One of the biggest. Up to a few years ago, when he retired, El Maloomis was the sole owner of it. Mm. He must be plenty wealthy, huh? Millions. Which offers a lot of possible reasons for his disappearance.

That's right. Okay, then, let's just tell me all. I thought I made myself clear, Johnny, when I said I should have sent you right on down there to Vineland, because all I know about him is that he's wealthy, retired, sportsman, yachtsman, that sort of thing.
