This is jazz This is jazz is radio's only live talent presentation of authentic improvised New Orleans jazz The writer and narrator is Rudy Blake famous jazz critic and author of the recent book shining trumpets the colorful history of this American music Each week at this time he and his great jazz band bring you a solid half hour of superb improvised jazz scenes from its history
Here is Rudy Blatt. Thanks, John Frederick. And here we are all set to go on the 26th session of this is jazz. Well, the All Star Stompers and I are here ready to continue the research work that we've been doing for six months.
A research into the forgotten wealth of American music. Many of the old tune that we have revived, and I believe that each of these revivals have had a real point, for we play each number in the style that it was written to be played in.
The number we're going to play now, for example, was written in 1920 to be played in the authentic improvised jazz style, not in the lifeless, over-arrangement of the average, large swing band. So, here we go with, I never knew I could love anybody like I love you.
That was, I never knew I could love anybody played in real 1920s style by the all-star stompers. I'd like to introduce the famous men who make up this band. There's Weilville, Davison, and his cornet.
Albert Nicklaus and his clarinet. Jimmy Archie and his trombone. Pops Foster and that bass. Baby Dods, drums. Ralph Sutton, piano. Danny Barker, guitar. And our guest of honor for today, Sidney Beshay, Soprano saxophone. Now we've got ready for you a tune that might be called the theme song of the early 1920s.
