Bronson the pilot was spared because the Indian chiefs hoped he would teach them how to fly the stratosphere plane marooned on the mountain plateau. Discovering that Bronson was being hailed in the tunnel cell, Kent joined him there and learned of the death sentence imposed on Lores and Jimmy.

Posing as chief of a distant tribe, Kent asked Seber, the aged tunnel gatekeeper, to take him to the valley of the shadows. The roost almost worked until Seabird noticed that the jewel can't war around his neck had changed color, proof that he was lying.

In the meantime, Lois and Jimmy, flanked by armed warriors, have entered the valley of the shadows, and are slowly approaching a giant waterfall that thunders over a cliff, and seems to pour into a huge hole in the ground.
