Born in this picture, Washington is not crossing the Delaware, as he did on that freezing Christmas night of 1776. Washington is really crossing the Rhine. A few years ago, a storm of controversy was raging over the well-known painting.

It finally grew so bitter that the picture was removed from the wall of the Metropolitan Museum. The flag portrayed in the picture was not adopted by the Continental Congress until the following June, Seven months after Washington crossed the Delaware.
