IBM technology is helping to explore the Earth's crust. Conventional methods probe to about five miles. But at Cornell University, an IBM supercomputing system analyzes seismic data at such high speed. Geologists are now charting the Earth's crust 20, 25, even 30 miles deep.

In geology, in other sciences, and in business, supercomputing is another example of IBM technology at work.
