And the music you hear now is just part of the incredible score composed by Bernard Herman for this film. For those of you who are into music, particularly classical music, my cat and note, that there are influences from Ravel, Deelius, Debussy, and even Vorn Williams and perhaps even Sevalius in this score.
Bernard Herman said it was his most romantic score and some of it actually found its way into Bernard Herman's opera of Emily Bronti's weathering heights. The source of Philip Dunn's screenplay was a novel by R.A. Dick.
The novel has probably been almost forgotten these days. I love it. And I love the film I think even more. Mrs. Muir is played by Jean Tierney. It is perhaps the loveliest and most charming performance.
And Philip Dunn described Mrs. Muir as he conceived her the screenplay as a practical courageous young woman whose main reaction is to finding a ghost in her new house is one of extreme irritation. What a way to start a relationship.
Rex Harrison of course plays the ghost, Captain Greg. It's a wonderful piece of teamwork with these two players, both brilliantly cast and really both of them cast against their screen image. A little story for you and anecdote about Hemingway that's rather relevant. In In the course of this film, Mrs. Bure is typing the memoirs of Captain Grade.
At one point, a question is raised.
