Lux presents Hollywood. The Lux Radio Theater brings you Robert Taylor, Loretta Young, and Robert Young in The Philadelphia Story. Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. Cecil B. DeMille. Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. Names make news, and these names make news in Hollywood this week.
Loretta Young, Robert Taylor, and Robert Young. Bob Taylor made news in several hundred theaters with a nice piece of acting in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer epic of American heroism, the town. Loretta Young came back to town after a tour of Army Camps in the Middle West and caught the public fancy all over the country in the Paramount film China.
And Bob Young was doing the same thing in MGM's slightly dangerous. Those are the names that fell out the headline on our marquee, but that isn't the whole story. It was a lot more, and it's called the Philadelphia story.
Philip Barry wrote the play, Broadway audiences cheered it, and Metro Golden Mayor followed with the motion picture success. The night I saw the play on Broadway, it was pretty obvious somebody was going to make a hit picture out of it.
So I went backstage and tried to buy it. I was a lot too late. But it says, find a play for radio, as it was for the stage of screens. So I'm getting a great deal of satisfaction out of putting on this production tonight.
At a rough guess, I'd say about five or six hundred thousand people were able to see the Philadelphia story on Broadway. Perhaps another two hundred thousand saw it on the road. But tonight, luck's toilet soap makes it possible for many millions to hear it, and all at the same time.
