Little Davy Crockett. You know of course about Davy Crockett, but chances are you don't know that today in Tennessee there's a nine-year-old boy called Little Davy Crockett. You see his real name is Davy, and because he's considered the bravest boy in the state, the folks there have nicknamed him Little Davy Crockett.
And here's how he got that name. On Sunday, Davy's folks and a neighbor family went on a picnic together into one of the wildest parts of the Tennessee Mountains. After lunch, someone suggested the children go berry picking along the mountain paths, which they did.
For a long time, Susan, the neighbor's seven-year-old daughter and Davy were busy picking berries side by side, not noticing that they had strayed far from their families. when they decided to return, they couldn't find their way. They were lost. And Susan began to cry.
Now, don't you cry, Susan. We'll be okay, said Davy. Well, I want my mother, cried Susan. Of course you do, replied Davy. I want my mother, too. But crying won't find her. Isn't that so?
Yes, I guess so, Sniff Susan, but what will we do? My scoutmaster told me about things like this once continued Davey. He said that once we get scared, we just can't think straight, and we have to be able to think Susan in order to figure out what we're going to do.
So let's think carefully. Now we were told if we ever got lost in the woods, we must stay right where we are. It makes it easier for the search party to find us. Having made this decision, Davy got Susan to help him make a comfortable place for them to lie down while they awaited a searching party.
