The infant was discovered in a box on a crude raft as it was washed onto the beach at the province town Massachusetts. He was the only survivor of a ship that sank in a storm.

The child was adopted and given the name George Soper. He never learned his true name, the nationality of his parents, or even the name of the ship. Believe it or not.
