What happens

Karen, the aging station chief of Kerbstone, a satellite outpost where misfits from Earth wait to be certified for deep-space colonization, must place his assistant Treen and a new arrival, his old student Judson, in the program. Judson is drawn to Treen, while the cynical newcomer Walt and his companion Flower complicate matters. Karen is pulled between personal feelings and his duty as he watches the lights on the status board that show which ships are still in space. The episode, from the X Minus One series, first aired on NBC on July 24, 1956, and is adapted from a Theodore Sturgeon story. Its cast includes Craig McDonald, Patsy O'Shea, Dick Hamilton, Charlotte Manson and Bob Hastings.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
